Our History

Our firm was originally known as Bartlett and Co. who were a Commercial law firm based on Cannon Street, EC4, where Horatio Percival Costerton was a solicitor. The firm had many international clients who were wealthy Victorian business men.

Today we have the original day books that give us an insight into the rapid developments of the industrial revolution. The day book records every client's legal requirements and contains pages and pages of clients purchasing shares for American goldmines.

During the Second World War the firm was badly damaged by bombing. The deed boxes and the day book were some of the only items to be rescued from the office and are now valuable records of the daily events in the firm. To this day you can still smell the smoke from the fire on the yellowed pages.

The firm then moved to Vintry House, Queen Street Place, EC4 and set up their new offices there over looking the River Thames. Horatio Costerton become a more senior solicitor and regularly represented clients at the Royal Courts of Justice. During this time, both of Horatio's grown up sons, Alan and Michael Costerton were undertaking their articles and worked alongside their Father at the firm.

The firm relocated to 24 John Street, Holborn, London, WC1 and continued to offer legal advice for both commercial and private clients. As the Costerton family home was in Carshalton, a client base was building there and a decision was made to move out of the City.

In 1970's, taking the opportunity to move further out of London and avoid the smog Horatio Percival Costerton bought Manor Chambers, a property in the heart of Sutton along with his son Michael Stewart Costerton. Many alterations were made to transform the old stables. To this day Manor Chambers remains one of the oldest buildings in Sutton.

More recently, Michael's youngest son Edward Alexander Costerton, has joined the legal team at Costertons.
